Walking Will Benefit Almost Anyone

August 19th, 2008

Although walking will benefit almost anyone, someone with high levels of fitness probably wouldn’t gain that much. For someone who doesn’t exercise that much, a half hour walking program every day would soon see results in breathing, slower heartbeat to name but a few. If you have been walking fast, walk slowly or stretch for a few minutes to cool down.

So you do not become bored, it always worth finding different locations to walk or varying the routes and if at all possible ask someone to join you as the time will pass faster and it will be more enjoyable. Some of the most popular endurance exercises are stationary bike riding, walking and rowing.

People looking to lose weight can also find walking a great way to do this without having the expense of joining a gym or expensive clothing and it is something that almost everyone can do naturally. Of course if you can combine your walking with another activity where other aspects of fitness can be achieved then you will benefit even more.

Two other benefits of walking are the cost, if you don’t have a great budget (but do get a good set of walking boots or similar,) and the fact that it is considered a low impact activity do should not damage the joints. In fact the American Heart Association recommends that you should start by walking for only five minutes per day if you haven’t been exercising for a while, gradually building to that 30 minutes per day mentioned earlier.

As a complete method to stay fit or lose a few pounds plus the health benefits involved, walking just can’t be beaten. Some people swear by using a treadmill though as they can experience a variety of walking conditions without leaving their house.

Treadmills are still the most popular exercise machine out there, but not everyone can use a treadmill safely, especially when it is to be used for running because of the often high impact exercise that is required. Because the belt is motorized and not regulated by your own walking pace it allows for a huge degree of versatility whereby the speed and difficulty can be adjusted and the use of pre-set programs can increase your fat burning or improve your cardiovascular health.

Smooth Treadmills are the #1 seller and manufacturer of fitness equipment on the Internet. They offer exclusive Smooth brand of treadmills, home gyms and elliptical trainers.

When you look for a treadmill, make sure it has a powerful motor and good range of height adjustment and has a sturdy feel when you step onto it. The treadmill works for a lot of people who like to work out in the privacy of their own home.

Ultimately it is the convenience of a treadmill that is hard to beat because if even if you only have ten minutes to spare you can use it so it means you can walk at any time you feel like it.

Buying Home Fitness Equipment?

August 19th, 2008

It is not surprising with our rushed but at the same time sedentary lives that the use of home fitness equipment has increased over recent years. Unfortunately many would be fitness enthusiasts make the mistake of buying the wrong type of equipment because they haven’t thought about what they require; there is an enormous range and the last thing you want is to buy the wrong piece. Don’t believe in everything the commercials tell you about the equipment as some may seem easy to use on television but that does not mean it will be for you. It is always worth just stepping back and making sure you have the right reasons for buying fitness equipment.

No-one wants to waste money no matter who they are and cross trainers, elliptical trainers and Smooth Treadmills can be expensive; ensure it is something that will get plenty of use and perhaps will help you with other interests you may have. The problem is that buying the equipment is the easy bit it is actually using it that takes determination; you want to know that you will be able to use it and it will perform as expected. Make sure you can afford it and don’t be fooled into the thought that you will definitely use something because you spent a great deal of money on it; the cost is not the reason it will be used, whatever you may think. Whatever budget you set yourself to spend on it, just make sure it will be up to the job you want it to do because although cost may be an issue, quality is also important.

Although this is not always true and you might find yourself buying expensive equipment that is of poor quality or a cheaper alternative that is actually made to a high standard. Massive savings can be made buying nearly new sports equipment from the classifieds so take a look at these first. Sometimes you will actually get a better deal buying when the sales start or when there is ex-demonstration home fitness equipment ready to go on sale and they want to sell off the older stock. Obviously before all this you need to check your available space as there is no point buying a beautiful, all-singing-all-dancing piece of kit that won’t fit in the house.

It is great if you have a ready made room to place it in but if not, it is worth considering the garage which has become a favorite for many home gym installations. Some apparatus comes with a health warning so you would be wise to have a physical examination before you buy, especially if there are hereditary medical problems in the family. Whilst you are trying the fitness apparatus out ensure that it doesn’t cause any discomfort because if it does you will refrain from using it. One way to get around this is to join a fitness centre and get used to using certain pieces of apparatus first; this should give you a good idea if it will be more cost effective to buy your own home fitness equipment. If you really can’t make up your mind, take advice from a fitness instructor who will better equipped to deal with this type of enquiry.

Negative Ions or Coffee: What is Better for Staying Alert at the Wheel?

April 4th, 2008

Is there an alternative to coffee for staying alert while
driving-something without the familiar addictive side effects one can
experience from caffeine. Researchers believe air charged with negative
ions may be the remedy to prevent drivers from nodding off on the
highway.

Negative ion air purifiers for cars make clean airflow available to a
driver. It accomplishes this by releasing negative ions into the car’s
atmosphere. These negative ions attach themselves to positive ions in
the air. Micro particles, of a positive charge, are fungi, exhaust,
bacteria, dust, mold, and other pollutants.

When the negative ions attach to these positive particles, they form a
cluster. The resultant cluster is now too heavy to remain in the air.
It falls to surfaces inside the car. The result is cleaner air to
breathe in the vehicle, while a simple wiping of the surface cleans
away the residue. Fresher air means an energized driver who is more
alert.

Why is ionization of vehicle interior air a better alternative to
coffee? Coffee is a stimulant because of the caffeine present within.
Regular over-indulgence of coffee can lead to caffeine addiction.

This addiction can interfere with one’s normal life activities
including driving. Some of the addictive side effects of caffeine are
irregular heartbeat, diarrhea, rambling thought flow and speech, and
nervousness (Psychology Today, Online Edition, Caffeine-Section
II-Symptoms, Review date April 2005).
Those who rely on caffeine to function and then strive to wean
themselves off may experience certain other adverse effects. Withdrawal
symptoms can include depression due to decreased serotonin levels.
Researchers point to the fact that depression and low serotonin levels
go hand in hand.

A John Hopkins study found that withdrawal symptoms such as depression
start as early as twelve to twenty-four hours after the last drink of
caffeine. Symptoms can last for one to nine days with peak intensity at
one to two days (John Hopkins Medicine, Online Edition, September 29,
2004, Caffeine Withdrawal Recognized as a Disorder, Paragraph 7).

Some automobile manufacturers already have ‘ion air conditioning’ in
place in some models of cars in Japan. To promote alert driving these
systems clean and cool the air utilizing negative ions. It is a way to
keep the air fresh inside a car so drivers remain awake and focused.

Ionization of air with negative ions is a process that produces no side
effects. This makes it a perfect coffee substitute for motorists.
Research at Columbia University measured the antidepressant benefits of
negative ions. Related to seasonal affective disorder it nonetheless
showed air induced with negative ions acts as an antidepressant (Terman
M, Terman JS, Department of Psychiatry, Columbia University, Abstract,
1995); the exact opposite of caffeine withdrawal causing depression
symptoms.

The studies also showed no side effects from this ionization treatment.
This bodes well for negative ion purification use in many other areas.
The potential benefits for drivers prone to nodding off are undeniable.
Fresh, clean air invigorates and promotes a positive attitude.

A refreshed energized driver is a safer driver. While coffee may give a
short-term boost of energy, it is not long lasting. It eventually has a
downer effect. More coffee will not reverse this effect. It will
instead cause adverse symptoms to develop.

It is common sense to continue further study in this area. The
automobile industry’s initial forays show promise. Having negative ion
air purifiers in your car is an available option right now. You can
purchase portable models to install in a vehicle.

The Department of Transportation has not issued any edicts on requiring
them them, though. However, further study on making them standard
features in vehicles for the promotion of driving safety is something
to consider.

Fitness and Weight Loss Tips That Would Help You Feel Good About Yourself

September 17th, 2007

Being overweight can be a real big
problem. Your social life could be a bit less colorful and exciting
when you
are overweight. You are also at right risk of certain diseases such as
hypertension and diabetes. You should start thinking about
fitness and weight loss if you do not want to end up suffering from obesity related
diseases. There are many practical fitness and weight loss programs
that
you can follow to help shed off those extra pounds.

Eating a Balanced Diet

Eating a balanced diet should be part
of your
fitness and weight loss program. Eating right is very important
to keep your body well nourished. Contrary to popular belief, you do
not need to starve yourself to become thin. You do not need to skip
meals to
lose weight. According to experts, skipping meals is not a long-term
solution to your weight problem and it will not really help you achieve
a
healthy body.

Drinking Plenty of Water and Fresh Fruit Juices

According to experts, the person who
is undergoing a fitness and weight loss program will not really achieve
its optimum efficiency if they do not drink enough water and fruit
juices. Studies show that your body tends to accumulate water in the
most
unflattering areas if you do not take in enough liquid. Taking in
enough water daily will greatly help your body function well. On the
other
hand, drinking fruit juices will help nourish your body better and will
help restore the moisture of your skin.

Walking and Climbing Stairs

Taking long walks at least three
times a week is a great help to keeping yourself fit and healthy. Your
fitness and weight loss program should include brisk walking. Not only will
walking help you shed off extra pounds, if will also help you feel
better
about yourself. Studies have shown that people who take long walks
outdoors a few times a week are less prone to depression than those who
stay
indoors most of the time. If walking outside is not a possibility due
to bad weather then climbing stairs could be a very good way to keep
fit.
If you happen to live in an apartment building, you should try using
the stairs every now and then instead of the elevator. Climbing stairs
will
burn a lot of calories and will build your stamina at the same time.

Build Leg Strength Using a Bosu Fitness Ball

September 11th, 2007

You probably know that one of the best leg workouts you can do is the lunge. It builds your glutes as well as the front of your thighs. And really it is an all around good leg workout. How would you like to really power up your lunge workout? Try doing them onto a bosu fitness ball
for your personal fitness and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Performing regular forward lunges requires strength and coordination. Adding dumbbells in each hand increases the workout. Doing lunges onto the bosu ball with or without dubbells further adds to a degree of difficulty in doing this exercise. The bosu ball adds instability to the workout which helps develop balance as you increase your strength, power and coordination.

The most basic lunge movement, the dropped knee version, works best when using the bosu. Place your feet shoulder width apart. You want your knees to be at a 90-degree angle at the bottom of the movement, so you will have to adjust the distance from the bosu accordingly. Step out and up onto the bosu. Balance is key here. The first few exercises may find yourself a little unsteady. Once your foot is steady at the top of the bosu simply drop your other knee to the floor and then come back to the start position just as you would a regular lunge. Then lunge with the other leg.

When you get more confidence and gain your balance you can then start using weights for added resistance. The important thing to remember is to go slow and work on your balance. Lunges using a bosu is definitely not for the beginner. It is an advanced movement that requires fitness, strength and coordination.Wonder how to increase your fitness level? This exercise will help.

The Awesome Health Benefits of Garlic

September 2nd, 2007

Garlic may not smell the greatest but in the world of herbal medicine it is often touted as a “wonder drug” because garlic can help prevent everything from heart disease to many respiratory problems such as head colds and the flu. In years gone by raw garlic was used to treat the symptoms that cause acne to occur. Garlic is also believe to be a natural form of a mosquito repellent and it is known to strengthen the heart and to help lower high levels of cholesterol.

Research into the benefits of garlic has borne out the fact that it is a natural form of an antibiotic on a broad-spectrum sense as opposed to when it comes to targeted areas of the body. The human body does not build up any immunity to garlic which means that the positive health benefits derived from garlic continue as time passes. It has also been shown by research that garlic, and in particular garlic that is aged, has positive and intense antioxidant qualities. It is antioxidants that help to protect the body against what is known as free radicals in the human body. Free radicals are defined as “highly reactive molecules capable of causing damage in brain and other tissue.” It is important to note that free radicals are “common by-products of normal chemical reactions occurring in cells.”

There are two ingredients in garlic that are medicinal in nature and yield tremendous health benefits. The two ingredients are allicin and diallyl sulphides. Allicin is the more intense of the two and it provides the greatest of the health benefits for those who consume it. It is important to note that allicin is not found in garlic per se but is produced when garlic is either crushed or chopped into fine pieces. The more intense it is crushed and the finer the pieces are chopped, the more allicin will be created and therefore the stronger will be the medicinal benefits. Allicin is anti-fungal in nature and is commonly used to treat many fungal infections of the skin such as athlete’s foot. Be aware that being in direct contact with a sizable amount of crushed garlic can cause the skin to blister and there are some individuals who are allergic to garlic although garlic allergies are not terribly common.

Diallyl sulphides tend to be lower in medicinal benefits than allicin but they still do provided some benefits. Sulphides of this nature have no anti-fungal properties but they are excellent for blood circulation and help to keep the overall circulatory system working to its optimum best. Diallyl sulphides are beneficial to the immune system because they give it a much-needed boast and they also help to lower the LDL or “bad” cholesterol” in the body.

Just the same as allicin, garlic needs to be crushed or chopped to bring out the diallyl sulphides. It is essential to make it clear that when garlic is cooked as a whole it provides no medicinal benefits or health benefits to the human body whatsoever.

Fitness Is Important For Your Kids Health

July 17th, 2007

Aerobic Activity for Kids

Children have a different lifestyle in this day and age. Basically they like to do so many more things indoors than ever before. This is the downside of LCD televisions, laptop computers, Ipods, high-tech video games and other modern toys. While TVs and video games were certainly around when I was a child in the 80s, my father forced us out the door to play outside. This was a good thing in retrospect. And to be completely honest, we loved it! This is probably the best source of exercise for children. Simply allow them to run around and frolic with their peers outdoors.

How much exercise do you suppose your child receives on a daily basis? What is his/her routine after school and during the summer months? You see, herein lies the dilemma. If you allow your children to lounge about indoors all the time, they are likely to become overweight. This is something you don’t want! Imagine how fast that weight can add up. If your little one doesn’t engage in the right exercise for children, he/she may definitely end up overweight by the time high school hits.

Not to mention adulthood. It’s your responsibility as a parent to ensure this doesn’t happen. If by some chance your child frowns at playing outdoors with friends or even alone, you might want to consider indoor exercise for children. There are infinite regimens that can be taken advantage of. Work out with your child! Try various calisthenics such as push-ups, sit-ups, crunches, jumping jacks, jump rope, and stretching. And if you’re looking for a back-up plan, there’s always swimming. This is a wonderful exercise for children and adults alike.
