Diabetic Meal Plans

The aim of a diabetic diet plan is to control the amount and speed at which sugar enters the body. This is because the diabetic body cannot process sugar in the blood unless insulin is injected or some form of medication is taken to make the body more sensitive to insulin. By controlling the amount of sugar, the diabetic can have a better idea of the amount of insulin he/she will need or the type of medication he/she will need. By controlling the speed at which the sugar enters the body, the diabetic can prevent rapid surges in the level of sugar in the blood. Fluctuating blood sugar levels are thought to exacerbate the diabetic condition and lead to further complications over time like retinopathy and nerve damage.

Thus the type of diabetic foods that should be factored into any dietary plan are things like soluble and insoluble fiber. They consist of things like Brussel sprouts, peas, oats and wheat. Fiber helps to slow the glucose absorption thus prevent spikes in blood sugar levels. Fiber is also thought to reduce cholesterol and prevent intestinal cancer.

Eat lean protein like fish rather than red meat.

Avoid high fat foods like sweets, candy and ice cream. Or have them as a special treat.

Alcohol is generally very high in sugar content so it is a good idea to take it infrequently or not at all. Avoid soft drinks as they are also high in sugar. Substitute these beverages with diet sodas, unsweetened drinks or plain water.

Try to eat at the same time each day. Again this gives more control on insulin or medication treatment. Try to eat six meals a day – breakfast, mid morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack, dinner and evening snack.

Eat everything in moderation, especially calories. This can be formalized by a dietitian as excess calories cause weight gain which will make the body less resistant to insulin and make your diabetes worse.
